Our Top 10 ♀ Theoriticians of spatial theory.

Here is our top-ten of (living) female theoreticians, whose works and theories are relevant to architecture, urban planning and spatial theory, in english.

All of them are located or teach in the US or the UK, so i’ll be doing another post on Non-american or UK-based female theoriticians.

10-Fran Tonkiss

Writer of ‘Space, the City and Social Theory‘, Fran Tonkiss is the director of the  Cities Programme at the London School of Economics.

Her interests in urbanism include cities and social theory, urban development and design, urban inequalities, spatial divisions and public space. In economic sociology, her research focuses on markets, globalisation, trust and social capital.

09-Dolores Hayden

Architect, urban historian, Dolores Hayden is the author of beloved “Redesigning the American Dream: Gender, Housing, and Family Life”.  She teaches at Yale.

08- Sharon Zukin

Sharon Zukin is an urban and economic sociologist specialized in modern urban life. Naked City trace the recent reshaping of the city through deindustrialization, gentrification, and immigration, as well as the rise of the symbolic economy based on cultural production and consumption.

07- Beatriz Colomina

Beatriz Colomina is a renowned architectural historian and theorist who has written extensively on questions of architecture and media, as well as on architecture and gender. She is the author of several books, Sexuality and Space, Cold War Hot Houses: Inventing Postwar Culture from Cockpit to Playboy, etc.

She presented notably “Women in Architecture,” a keynote lecture in the conference Female Forces, 100 year anniversary, at the Royal Academy Copenhagen.

06- Ananya Roy

Ananya Roy is a scholar of international development and global urbanism. Roy is Professor of City and Regional Planning and Distinguished Chair in Global Poverty and Practice at the University of California at Berkeley,  and the author of City Requiem, Calcutta: Gender and the Politics of Poverty and Poverty Capital: Microfinance and the Making of Development .

05- Chantal Mouffe

Mouffe is a political theorist, post-marxist, critical theorist, interested in  spaces of democratic engagement.

She currently holds a professorship at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster, where she directs the Centre for the Study of Democracy.

04- Keller Easterling

Easterling is an architect, urbanist, writer. She is Associate Professor at Yale School of Architecture and author of Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades , in which she excavates the politics linking globalization and architecture.

03-Denise Scott Brown

Scott Brown is an architect, planner, writer, educator, and principal of the firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. Denise Scott Brown and her husband and partner, Robert Venturi, are regarded among the most influential architects of the twentieth century, and for writting the mythical Learning From Las Vegas: the Forgotten Symbolism of Architectural Form.

02- Gayatri Spivak

Gayatri  Spivak is a theorist, philosopher and  Professor at Columbia University. She is a postcolonial theorist, and though particularly focusing on spatial theory, Spivak is relevant to all studies on informality, slums, urban poverty.

01- Saskia Sassen

Sassen is a  sociologist and an  economist noted for her analyses of globalization and international human migration, global cities. She is the author of The Global City: New York, London, Tokyo.
